How do bail bonds work?
Bail Bonds are regulated by the Department of Insurance, so by law every bail bond agent must charge the same premium, which is 10% of the bail amount. This money is non-refundable and “gone” once the defendant is released from jail. There are small discounts that may be applied, for instance, if you have a private attorney on retainer already, etc.
Here is an example of the typical situation: a defendant gets arrested and a judge has a bail set for those charges. Once the defendant gets to jail, they call a family member or friend. The individual that the defendant calls then has two choices.
First choice, if the bail is set at $25,000, they can get $25,000 in cash and go to the jail and post a cash bond with the full $25,000 directly with the jail. Once the defendant has met all of their obligations with the court and the associated charges, whomever put up the $25,000 gets it all back.
Second choice, the individual can call a bail bondsman. The bail bondsman would meet with the co-signer and can charge no more than 10% (which in this case would be $2,500). By co-signing on the bail, the individual guarantees the bail bondsman the balance of the $25,000 if the defendant decides to skip out on the bail. If the defendant misses their court date then the bail bondsman and the co-signer have 181 days to locate and turn in the defendant in order for the co-signer to not be liable for the full $25,000.
Qualifications
to Post Bail
Qualifications for being a co-signer to post bail differ on a case by case scenario. But what I can tell you is anything $25,000 and over must be co-signed by somebody that can back it with real estate property. Meaning, they must have their most recent property tax bill, and whomever is listed on that property tax bill must be present to co-sign.

This can be paid by cash, credit/debit card, money order or cashier’s check, and in some instances with financial proof we will take personal checks.

California law states that a bail bond can be no more than 10% of the bail amount. If a judge sets bail at $25,000 for an inmate and he or she doesn’t have $25,000 they, or one of their friends or family members (co-signer) will need to pay a bail bondsman a non-refundable premium of $2,500 to post their bail. (*see below for payment options)
For qualified individuals we can offer a 10% to 30% savings on your premium. This discount can result in substantial savings.

*Chico Bail Bonds offers payment arrangements ad financial options to our clients. No payments are available for bails set at $15,000 or less. Over $15,000 is 50% down and balance paid in five equal payments.

What do I need to bail someone out of jail?
- There are certain things that a cosigner needs to bail someone out of jail: Valid ID, Paycheck Stub, Utility Bill. Possibly a current property tax bill.
- Cosigner must be also be a U.S. Citizen and must be 18 or older.

How long Does it take for paperwork?
It will take about 30 minutes to do the paperwork at our office.

How long does it take for a person to get out of jail?
After the paper work at our office is completed, we would need whomever is bringing the defendant home to follow us to the facility they are at. Most facilities take 30 minutes to 5 hours

What are the responsibilities of a cosigner?
A cosigner, someone who is willing to sign for the defendant, is responsible for the following four things:
- To make sure the defendant makes all appearances to court
- The co-signer must also communicate with Chico Bail Bonds any changes that may come up with the defendant.
- To make sure the premium is paid (if applicable)
- The co-signer must make sure they ask as many questions as necessary prior to bailing out the defendant, since they will be the responsible party for the full amount of the bail if the defendant does not comply with their court obligations.

What are the responsibilities of a defendant?
The responsibilities of a defendant are the following:
- Upon being released, the defendant will need to immediately talk with the co-signer as well as report to the local bonds office and complete any necessary paperwork unless the co-signer was able to complete everything. The defendant or co-signer should receive additional court dates or information at this time.
- The defendant must notify the co-signer, as well as Chico Bail Bonds, of all new court dates by either coming in personally or notifying by phone.
- The defendant must show up to all court dates.

Is there any type of a refund after the defendant goes to court?
No, that money is non-refundable upon release from the jail on the bond we posted. However, if we are unable to post the bond under certain circumstances, we are able to issue and refund.

Does the co-signer need to come back with the defendant to complete
paperwork?
No, but in some circumstance the defendant must immediately come into Chico Bail Bonds after being released.
